Genoa Solidarity Action in Charlottesville, Virginia

Genova Libera.jpg
On Saturday, July 19, 2008, a small crowd gathered at the Pavillion Amphitheatre, near the University of Virginia in downtown Charlottesville, USA, to listen to an a capella concert in support of all of the demonstrators and citizens of Genoa who were present during the G8, July 18-22 2001, particularly the survivors of the Diaz School and Bolzaneto. The words, "Genova Libera," were added to a community chalkboard mural in front of the pavillion. A few clips of the concert are included here; due to poor video quality, the song cannot be entirely reproduced, but hopefully this will give you an idea of how it went. (Apologies, but Charlottesville and Richmond Indymedias are down, and DC is the next-closest IMC.)

BALTIMORE – The American Civil Liberties Union of Maryland today made public what it called "shocking" documents obtained through a Maryland Public Information Act (MPIA) lawsuit, revealing that the Maryland State Police (MSP) engaged in covert surveillance of local peace and anti-death penalty groups for over a year from 2005-2006. The organization expressed alarm at the incomprehensible spying revealed in 43 pages of summaries and computer logs, none of which refer to criminal or even potentially criminal acts, other than a few isolated references to plans for completely nonviolent civil disobedience.

They arrived at Malcolm X park @ 7 AM Friday July 11th, passed the White House mid-day. When arriving near the Capitol, the walk got the support of hundreds of people.

Congressman Conyers attended and declared: "Harry Belafonte, John Conyers, the entire Congressional Black Caucus of 43 men and women […] the Progressive Caucus in the House of Representative, the Hispanic Caucus, the Asian Pacific Caucus, all of us come together to join hands for one simple obvious reason that we’ve learned, your cause is our cause!."

Longest Walk 2 needs YOUR Solidarity!

This week, Native Americans arrive in Washington, DC. They have completed the Longest Walk 2 which began on February 11, 2008 when they left San Francisco. Traveling along a Northern and Southern route (total of 8,000 miles), they collected 8,000 bags of garbage and testimonies. This is a call for action to bring to fruition the message that "All Life is Sacred, Protect Mother Earth".
