Re: Protestors lay seige to US Capitol, smash window at military recruiter

I was at the recruiting station, the only one who managed to get inside before some kamikaze bicycle cops rammed the folks behind me and started hitting people. i wanted to hold a non-violent sit in, but do you have any idea how hard that is when YOU'RE BEING PUNCHED IN THE FACE? and yeah, since i was the only one in there i couldn't exactly sit down without getting arrested. some marine started walking towards me, tried to push me outside. pushed him back, was like 'recruit this!' and bolted. i think what happened afterwards was excellent, basically the remaining marchers surrounded the cops and the people they grabbed, eventually getting them to let go. then there was a discussion for a few minutes, and we moved on, retaking the capitol lawn again. By this time, the only form of revolt anyone had any energy for was a dance party, so we did that until we got forced back again. We had a standoff again with about forty silent cops in a line lined up along the sidewalk they'd forced us back to for another hour or so. just as i was about to leave, the cops piled into a bus and left. so yeah. had a discussion about violence on the way back;
i'm an SDSer; i was at the recruiter (but i went individually and few other SDSers participated), but the first capitol siege was way more in line with our attitude. we don't need masks and riot gear: our primary function is to invoke social change, not civil disorder. and i think with the capitol action was far more effective, since it's not UFPJ style passivity, but then it's positive and inclusionary in a way the black block and hardline anarchist actions can't be.

Re: Re: Protestors lay seige to US Capitol, smash window at military recruiter

"the way the hardline anarchist actions cant be"? everything about what happened yesterday with the radical youth bloc was a hardline anarchist action, there were no leaders, and there were specific targets, yet hundreds if not thousands of people joined us. There were people with masks and people without masks, and yes some people DO need masks. Some people have iffy legal situations, some can be recognized by cops, and it is easier for some people to blend in after a direct action. Also, it wasn't the Smithsonian sds-ers that took the capitol, it was the "hardline anarchists" in sds and out of sds that did. The other sds group didnt get there till nearly half an hour after we were already there. However, having said that, I think that it was great that the other SDS group joined us and maybe next time people in that group wont be so willing to write-off or pre-judge actions by others that haven't yet taken place. So before you start talking about what is inclusive and not, maybe you should look at your own group (the smithsonian group), it's tactics and the way that it went about organizing. Hopefully next time there will be more respect shown by all sides.

Here is the deal with masks, from a piece I found on the internet that I really liked!

"Those in authority fear the mask for their power partly resides in identifying, stamping and cataloguing: in knowing who you are [...]
Masking up releases our commonality, enables us to act together, to shout as one to those who rule and divide us 'we are all fools, deviants, outcasts, clowns and criminals'. Today we shall give this resistance a face; for by putting on our masks we reveal our unity; and by raising our voices in the street together, we speak our anger at the facelessness of power."
