Largest US CD NOT current antiwar movement!

Here are some bigger ones:

The Civil Rights movement that put a stop to official, written-into-law segregation in the 1950's and 1960's. Yes, I am talking about Martin Luther King, the Freedom Riders, and those who faced down Bull Connor's dogs and firehoses.

Twenty years later, there was a huge civil disobedience campaign in the United States to demand an end to investments in South Africa during the apartheid era. This campaign contributed to the end of apartheid but did not stop it alone.

Over 100,000 people left the U$ for Canada and elsewhere after refusing induction into or deserting from the Armed forces during Vietnam.Refusing to show up after being drafted is a form of civil disobedience, and desertion sure as HELL is.

Oh and by the way, let's NEVER, EVER forget how whole tribes and bands within tribes refused to be frog-marched onto reservations after things like Andrew Jackson's Indian Removal Act. Since half the Cherokee Nation refused to be "removed" until guns were held to their heads but did not use armed force themselves, I believe that constitutes civil disobediance.

Personally, I prefer the approach of Geronimo, Tecumseh, Sitting Bill, and Crazy Horse, but it was up to the Cherokee Nation to choose their own strategy. The Cherokee chose civil disobedience, and surely were larger than the number of Americans doing civil disobedience today over the Iraq War!

Hell, dude, it's not a movement, it's a friggin' cargo cult.

Re: Re: Largest US CD NOT current antiwar movement!

It is a movement, Mike. Maybe you don't agree with it -- but it is a movement. It is beginning to clog up the courts and taking up a lot of police energy and time. Also, millions have come down from civil suits against the police -- and many are actually not paying any of the fines now. A year or two ago, they probably were -- but times are changing.

Re: Re: Re: Largest US CD NOT current antiwar movement!

What is getting changed??? Other than clogging the courts. The war is still going on and nothing is happening other than a few lame-o's are getting arrested everyday because they chose to not because they were changing anything! FUCKING END THE FUCKING WAR ALREADY AND STOP WASTING YOUR FUCKING TIME IN THE COURTS!

BURN THE TANKS SMASH THE BANKS AND RESIST THE RANKS! (yes I mean every word of it and you should strive for this and stop with the lame C.D.s which are not really C.D.s but just Civil I wanna get arrested and be a star sit down time!

Re: Re: Re: Largest US CD NOT current antiwar movement!

The notion that the US can't handle arresting a few thousand (very generous holiday estimate) extra people a year is hilarious, and speaks of a seriously inflated sense of importance.
The privileged voluntary activist arrest is usually only summary offenses, which are glorified traffic tickets and have no effect on the legal system.

Re: Largest US CD NOT current antiwar movement!

Thanks for putting this up! The anti-Iraq movement has not stopped the war (with the do-nothing Democrats, has anything even changed?), and the claims that it is the largest civil disobedience movement are far fetched.

In addition to that list, I'd add the anti-choice demonstrators who blocked access to clinics. I read somewhere that something like 90,000 arrests were made in the years when they did that stuff.

Re: Re: Largest US CD NOT current antiwar movement!

Thanks for the anti-choice numbers. I hadn't even considered them.
