The USA is not a democracy and never has been. It's a Republic. In fact, it is only similar to a democracy in one way: the people vote. However, the votes are only used as "examples" for a select group of "representative voters" from each state who declare who wins. In other words, a handful of people vote someone into office as president, and thus it is a not a democracy where mob rules apply. This process is intentional and prevents a multitude of evil people from damaging the lives of those who are good (God bless the founding-fathers, who were either Christian or they did not hide the fact very well).
