Mysterious?
The place is in an old building that has been rennovated on a shoestring including DIY effort and local help. There is certainly plenty of room for the possibility of faulty work (even from the best of intentions) to have caused a problem. We're not talking about top-notch engineering here.
It is unfortunate that it happened, and the tensions with the landlord are definitely compounding the problem (but so is how well Mawonaj is functioning systemically anyway).
But it isn't mysterious. At least not yet. For one to say something is mysterious without backing it up with credible assertions that cast doubt on the normalcy is to deny one's self credibility in future assertions one might make.

think it over
very to the point and i'll have to agree with this.
as much as i love this place the few times i've been there, i would suggest that a cause of the fire be determined before rebuilding takes place.

credit card fraud
I still don't know what to make of it. Mawonaj seems like such a great place and I just figured it was somebody working there scamming the place (and me).

Concei doesn't own the building, and therefore can't sell it - asshole.

In future, stick to the facts, and put personal grudges to the side, especially in the middle of disasters and relief.
Re: Fire at Cafe Mawonaj and Rebuilding
Personally, Cafe Mawonaj was a poorly managed venue. There was no consistency in staff, menu, or events. The service was slow (the food was acutally good) and there were rats running throughout the place. There were always problems with sanitation, heat, and A/C.

You know, if you don't sign your name to your accusations about the Cafe, then people should just dismiss your words as irresponsible rumor-mongering. If you honestly have a beef with the Cafe, then be responsible and post your name.

Re: Fire at Cafe Mawonaj and Rebuilding
I held meetings there every week, never experienced problems with staff, rats, or sanitation. There was no inconsistency in events, and they were always very accomidating. Granted, the service was slow, but what does that have to do with anything...

This was my post and it was anonymous because I'm not a registered user. My name is DJ D'Salaam and I used to DJ there every wednesday night from January 2005 thru October 2005 for "Mwazi Wednesday's Open Mic" co-sponsored by my company, Urban Intalek Studios (if you need any more info to validate my commments, please let me know).
I've mentioned my above comments to Concei on a number of occasions. Cafe Mawaonaj was begining to improve with the help of Stacey and her husband (nuff respect to them both). Because Concei was active with more than running a venue, he never had the needed time to properly run Cafe Mawaonaj. As a result, there was a high turnover in staff who never gave a fuck about the place. Unfortunately, the venue began to decline to the conditions I mentioned in my comment.
Needless to say, I was terribly disappointed when I found the unexpected charge on my account. I stand by what I mentioned in my post and I'm open for any other commentary regarding this issue.
Regards,
DJ D'Salaam
Re: Fire at Cafe Mawonaj and Rebuilding
If you had anyone go over the building with an ohms meeter they could of found any shorts. What kind of wiring was it? Was it that old peg wiring? Thats often found in old houses--and will spark.
But if you need to rebuild do it. Act of God is a legitimate grounds for breaking a contract. Was the roof damaged? If so throw a tarp over it--protect it from rain damage.
Good luck in your restoration though. Despite anonymous remark about DIY electricity is not rocket science. Just get someone who is competant to check your work behind you. Use GFI outlets whenever you can--they rock.
Good luck!
Re: Fire at Cafe Mawonaj and Rebuilding
Slow service has alot to do with surviving in the food/beverage service business. Alot of the guest who came to my Wednesday night open mic often complained about the service and refused to buy any food because they didn't want to wait an hour for a salad...Cafe Mawonaj makes money from patrons buying food...No patrons, no business.
Regarding the rats, there were plenty...Cafe Mawanoj is right next door to the Howard Theater (a rats nest for decades). My patrons and I would see rats running in and out all night....Maybe they just came out on Wednesday nights to see the open mic?
Yes, they were friendly...Yes, they were accomidating. These were the reasons I held my open mics at Cafe Mawonaj. But, things could've been better.
Re: Fire at Cafe Mawonaj and Rebuilding
Also, the wiring in Mawanaj is fairly modern, although I do not know when it was put in. It has 3-wire outlets(with the ground lead), and the expensive metal-shielded cable(the safest kind).
