Georgetown silences worker voices using campus police

Yesterday, Georgetown Solidarity Committee members (GSC) and workers planned to enter the Advisory Committee on Business Practices (ACBP) meeting to voice their dissatisfaction with the committee’s inaction, present their demands of a living wage and right to organize and give Georgetown administrators a deadline of March 14, 2006 to implement the demands.

A crowd of janitors who clean Georgetown’s buildings attempted to enter the ACBP meeting to present their demands to the committee that has a tremendous power over their working conditions. Currently the workers have no representation on the committee and found it the best way to express their grievances. But when they attempted to attend the meeting, the Department of Public Safety (DOPS) was ordered to provide strong resistance to the workers; about 20 DOPS officers blocked the entrance to New South, the site of the meeting.

Student members of GSC tried to make way for the workers. A GSC member attempted to get past DOPS into the building, but a DOPS officer forcefully prevented him from entering. The GSC member fervently struggled with the DOPS officers until five officers finally restrained him to the ground. #file_2# Other students struggled to get in and were also restrained by DOPS. Two of the students were bloodied.

Meanwhile, other students held signs and chanted loudly in solidarity holding down the nearby intersection.

Not must at revolution are you...

A bunch of middle aged, over fed cops had no problem defending themselves.

Your self esteem must be severely damaged. Sue them for psychic damages.

Re: Not must at revolution are you...

Just FYI: You're talking about campus police -- "rent-a-cops" who are underpaid and almost entirely people of color. These officers and students are explicitly on the same side of the struggle. The enemy is those in power at the college, and it's the system that forces these officers to choose between restraining student activists and losing their ability to feed their families.

Re: Georgetown silences worker voices using campus police

So you were denied your "right" to form a mob and kick in the door of what sounds like a private meeting? You certainly shouldn't be shocked that you met resistance.

Re: Re: Georgetown silences worker voices using campus police

First of all, this was a peaceful event until students were restricted by campus police.

Secondly, the committee's charter requires the presence of directly-hired and sub-contracted workers. No workers had been invited to attend this meeting of the committee; the gathered workers wanted to speak at a meeting that they did, indeed, have a right to be at.

try again

it was a peaceful event until students tried to enter the meeting, were refused entrance, and then as it says in the article began to struggle with the university police. had they remauined outside, acted like mature adults should act and not tried to resort to violence, then none of this would have happened.

this is nothing more than a self aggrandizing, media, activist moment.

Re: Georgetown silences worker voices using campus police

uh..sounds like the students were at fault.

slave solidarity

you can't leave this nonsense at " I guess the students were at fault", the workers had every right to attend the board meeting. The rent a cops were just doing their job , I agree. The cheif of campus security police should be confronted about the order to allow the campus officers to use force. and comments on the action should be teased out of board members in writen form so if any express anything but regret over the situation then further action should be taken using their writen statements as evidence.

Re: Georgetown silences worker voices using campus police

I love how ignorant people can be. Campus Police officers have the same authority as the Dc police and many are paid comparible wages. Funny how when someone is assaulted, robbed, or needs assistance they don't mind asking for assistance from the "rent a cops". And for the people trying to get in the building, get a freakin hobby. Bunch of hippies tryin to make a point. Get a life.
