Stadium Groundbreaking Tomorrow; DC Central Kitchen Underfunded

Tomorrow, Thursday, May 4th, 10 AM
South Capitol Street and O Street

The groundbreaking for the controversial new stadium (for the Washington Nationals) will begin ceremonially tomorrow at 10 AM at the intersection of South Capitol Street and O Street. Plans for the stadium have already displaced many longtime residents, businesses, and communities, either by enticement, coercion, intimidation, or eminent domain. The stadium is projected to cost the District of Columbia in excess of $600 million dollars.

Meanwhile, DC Central Kitchen, which has provided 2300 meals a day to various DC homeless shelters, has essentially shut down due to underfunding. In this case, the organization responsible for giving the funding to DC Central Kitchen is the Community Partnership for the Prevention of Homelessness (apparently their strategy is to prevent homelessness by not giving people food). CPPH has ignored repeated urgent requests from DC Central Kitchen to stop this crisis by allowing them to continue providing meals for close to 2300 DC residents a day. CPPH's executive director, Sue Marshall, can be reached at 202 543 5298 ext. 102. She needs to be urged to give DC Central Kitchen the funding that they need, so that 2300 people in DC can receive regular meals.

How ironic it is that funding exists for a stadium projected to cost DC at least 600 million dollars, while many shelters are scrambling to find alternative plans to get folks the food that they need (please see dc.indymedia.org/newswire/display/133677/index.php for more information on some ways to help). Come out and show your disgust with the backwards priorities of those controlling this situation, profit over people.

Folks are encouraged to help alleviate this crisis in whatever way they can, and to come out tomorrow, to South Capitol Street and O Street at 10 AM to voice their displeasure with the backwards priorities of some of DC's governmental officials and their subcontractors (the Community Partnership for the Prevention of Homelessness).

Thursday, May 4, 10 AM South Capitol Street and O Street

Say no to profit over people!

It is OUTRAGEOUS that $450M is being spent on the nationals, and $600M plus on their stadium, while food is cut off to ALL homeless shelters due to the city's budget stinginess on poverty issues!

This is a political perfect storm brewing in DC, and now is the time to come on out and SPEAK UP against starving the poor while the rich get fat on our tax money.

Come on out both times(10AM and 9:30 PM), and show both the mainstream media and the mayor what you think!
