The issue is this-the Immokalee tomato pickers are paid the equivalent of a minimum wage onloy if trhey managte to pick TWO TONS of tomatoes per day, every day. This is almost impossible, so workers are getting subminimum wage pay-denounced by protestors as "modern-day slavery." To correct this would add just ONE CENT PER POUND to the cost of tomatoes, like it did at Taco Bell.

As the protest grew to 25 people or so filling the very limited space near the restaurant,customer began to turn away. For a while the main door was locked to exclude protestors, but it was unlocked after a few potential customers turned away on finding it locked.

Signs included takeoffs on McDonalds cartoon characters demandign that McDonalds stop "clowning around" with workers rights.

At the height of the protest, we deluivered a letter to the owner after a few people managed to force their way inside. The letter was pocketed while a blond woman(in a store with a mostly nonwhite crew)attempted to forbid the taking of pictures by another journalist.

This was just one of many protests this weekend at McDonals outlets over the tomato pay issue. The Coalition of Immokalee Workers won at Taco Bell and will win at McDonalds as well
