==What is this Different Kind of Dude Fest?==
DKDF is about good music minus the often self-destructive, sexist dudedom that comes along with many a music fest. And DKDF is about possibilities for change and growth, as one organizer says, “Different Kind of Dude Fest is about creating a safe, inclusive space where people feel like they can learn, grow, discuss, and have a positive experience. Different Kind of Dude Fest is a place to learn about yourself and how to deal with the issues that go along with living in a misogynist, patriarchal society”
==It's also a Fundraiser==
HIPS (Helping Individual Prostitutes Survive): HIPS’ mission is to assist female, male, and transgendered individuals engaging in sex work in Washington, DC in leading healthy lives.
UBUNTU: UBUNTU is a women of color and survivor-led collective based in Durham, North Carolina, USA, where community members are breaking the silence about sexual assault and racist violence as part of a long struggle against racism, classism, sexism and all forms of oppression.

SATURDAY, AUG 11 @ Dance Institute of Washington, 3400 14th St NW
12-1pm Large group activity exploring the mainstream and margins of punk culture and gender
1:15-2:45pm Alternative Community Response to Sexual Violence
This workshop will cover responding to disclosures from primary and secondary survivors and creating community strategies for supporting survivors and holding perpetrators accountable. It will be fun and kick ass!
3-4:30pm Cum As You Are: masculinity, male bodies and positive sexual relationships
Even feminist punks live within and reinforce patriarchy. This experiential workshop will center male bodies and male voices to help us
discover the ways we reinforce and are hurt by our learned sexual behaviors. We'll also make space to learn about and develop new practices for ourselves around intimacy and sexuality, and share information about sexual and reproductive health.
3-4:30pm Challenging Gender Oppression through Anti-Sexist Men’s Groups
Participating in a men’s group can be an effective and transformative way for men to challenge gender oppression in ourselves and our communities. These groups can take many different forms, and this workshop will introduce participants to some existing groups, including Men Against Rape Culture (Durham, NC) and the Philly Dudes Collective, and discuss many of the issues involved in starting and participating in them. Among the challenges we will explore are: How do we find other men who are interested? What activities should the group undertake? How diverse should our group be, in which ways? How do we define who counts as a "man"? How can we deal within the group with differences in identity and experience? How do we create a shared analysis or political framework? What does accountability look like for our group? What resources exist for male anti-sexist individuals and groups? This workshop is open to all, but primarily aimed towards male-identified folks.
4:45-5:30pm Puppet Show on Consent and Sexual Relationships!

Re: Aug 10-11: Different Kind of Dude Fest 2007
generally the people that need to be at some event like this wont come.. people who organize events like this dont reach out to the males who are often at odds the most with all these internalized men issuesetc. and need some space to discuss them the most.
a puppet show?? are we kidding? i dotn think my male bro moshs are coming to this. just to be honest.
the format of this event is gonna bring a certain sect of the activist community or scene or whatever it is, that to many of the heavily effected is gonna seem hypocritical and self important.
often these labeled "bros," are already so far pushed out from these circles they wouldn't even consider coming to one of these events.
sorry to be such a drag, just want to be honest.

Re: Re: Aug 10-11: Different Kind of Dude Fest 2007
its not even constructive, not for me. and like i mentioned earlier, i aint even trying to bring any of my friends out to this either. cause i wouldnt want to do that to them. and i hate to shit on this event, but it makes me even more angry and have more contempt, to think what a scam this is to a lot of males out there, like me for example, who have anger and pain rule their life and attitude towards this world..
alot of people aint even gonna like that i admit this reality... im mean honeslty.. is this really for me?? did they have me in mind when they put this together? im not even sure what they thought.
i do know for sure that that "philly dudes collective" workshop that i went at ncor one time was an entire waste of my time.(no bullshit)
and like i said, aint gonna be there for those bands.
Re: Aug 10-11: Different Kind of Dude Fest 2007
BTW moshing I dont think is that bad maybe cause the scene where I live (Frederick) girls usually are moshing with the guys. Which is good and its a fun time nothing to do with sexism.

Re: Re: Aug 10-11: Different Kind of Dude Fest 2007
a certain sect of;
the already self isolated population of white males that attend events like this already.
LETS MAKE A FEST OF IT!!
my thoughts too, you attention starved troll.
Re: Re: Re: Aug 10-11: Different Kind of Dude Fest 2007
i think putting up a wall is just as bad as frat boys putting up a wall when it comes to this type of stuff.
a male liberation movement is really needed right now. the reclamation of patriarchal attitudes in the postfeminist community almost demands it. there's no more reason for men to be held to patriarchal standards than women. and yet, they are. usually by other men and often so-called radical women in the punk communty. everything from aesthetic and attitude gets wrapped up into ball of self loathing and anger.
so, you could complain, but what are your ideas for a better event and how in the world could you change this one if you don't go.
is it because you are too manly or not manly enough?
