BREAKING: Const Ave occupied as of 7PM b y antiwar students

As of 7PM Sep 29, almost 100 antiwar students are still occupying Constitution Ave/Penn Ave where they come together around 4th st NW near the Capitol.
tn_DSCI0935.JPG
As I left to post this, the occupation has been going on since about 4PM, with no sign of police attack nor preparation for one. Three tents and a large banner are set up, with the tents blocking the road and the banner along the median.

If you are in the area, please go down and check it out! While no police attack has occurred, that could change at any time. In addition rotating fresh activsts into the blockade could allow it to be sustained indefinately(tents for sleeping are there), with monday morning rush hour as the ultimate target.

Re: BREAKING: Const Ave occupied as of 7PM b y antiwar students

This was an amazing spontaneous action of civil disobedience that was joined by hundreds of marchers. Based on the report on their blog Troops Out Now considers this a great part of the success of the day. This action was a concrete manifestation of the slogan for the march "moving from protest to resistance!"

Thank you to all who ignored the blatant lies being told by a few of the TONC volunteers who were actively discouraging people from joining the sit-in. COINTELPRO? or just egomaniacs who can't see an opportunity for solidarity in stopping the war machine when it hits them in the face? You decide. Based on the way some of the volunteers were trying to POLICE the march participants, I'm still wondering...

In the end, I say the march was a success and the civil disobedience showed that this Troops Out Now March was as meaningful as the ANSWER and IVAW march and die-in on the 15th.

Thanks for reporting on this!

Just like Vietnam in the 60's....it's the STUDENTS that are going to stop the madness. God Bless them and their activism. And Bless the brave Monks and people of Burma who are an inspiration.

Re: Re: BREAKING: Const Ave occupied as of 7PM b y antiwar students

the vietnamese stopped the vietnam war, not a bunch of white college students

Re: Re: Re: BREAKING: Const Ave occupied as of 7PM b y antiwar students

Not much of a student of history are you?

Re: Re: BREAKING: Const Ave occupied as of 7PM b y antiwar students

Students stopped the Vietnam War?
Damn, I thought I got good weed.
I could have sworn it was the Vietnamese, the GI resistance, and hawks in the Nixon administration.
These students are just stopping for a photo op, as they continue their studies and resume their life of privilege, the same as their 60's counterparts did.

Re: BREAKING: Const Ave occupied as of 7PM b y antiwar students

Congrats to the students and their support teams. Look forward to reading about your ongoing blockade - kee up the good work.
Hope you awaken in a few hours to learn you've inspired blockaddes throughout DC.

If the Burmese people can take the streets against their tyranny, we can do no less to defeat Bush's war and the Republicans' creeping Gulag for the Republic.

Great, inspiring, non-violent work.

News Media won't pay attention without BODIES in the Intersections

Sadly -- although the majority of Americans want a quick exit from Iraq -- our U.S. news media only notice that point if there are bodies in an intersection.

So people lie in an intersection in Washington DC, so that the rest of us can hear that they oppose our continued occupation of Iraq.

Beefeater, you posted the same comment upthread, and you did not even try to defend yourself. Try something new, like why you think those people are fools.

When you post the same thing twice, you look like a fool.

Re: BREAKING: Const Ave occupied as of 7PM b y antiwar students

Why is the photograph of the student "protesters" so lilly white? That photograph doesn't represent America.

Where are the African Americans? Where are the Hispanic Americans?

Just lilly whites.

Re: Re: BREAKING: Const Ave occupied as of 7PM b y antiwar students

If you have been involved in the antiwar movement for any length of time you would know that the vast majority of antiwar activists are "lilly white." It is a sad fact of the movement that many are trying to address and change. There are many factors for this. In my opinion, class is the largest factor that keeps minorities from taking time off work to attend protests. Most of the people in the photos are middle class whites, because they can afford to be activists.

Re: BREAKING: Const Ave occupied as of 7PM b y antiwar students

While it is always good to see any peace action, we all know that 100 people sitting on the ground is not ending any war. As one who can easily remember the war against Vietnam, most of the protests ended in 1973 when the draft ended. Those protests were nationwide on most college campuses. However, the protests did not start that way. Our peace movement from the war against Korea was small, although the issues were the same, and after the phony 1964 Gulf of Tonkin incident that was the excuse to invade Vietnam and slaughter 3 million Vietnamese, it took another 4 years until the Tet Offensive of 1968, and the destruction of the American economy, for the peace movement to turn out large demonstrations in Washington, D.C. and San Francisco. By 1971, the US was off the gold standard and the American economy was declining to a point that the US signed the Paris Peace Accords. By 1973, the post-WW2 boom ended, and the US ecnoomy has been declining ever since. It was the armed might of the socialist world that made possible for those "little men in black pajamas" (and lots of women too) to defeat the mightiest military machine had seen since Nazi Germany on April 30, 1975, when they liberated Ho Chin Minh City. Now, the American economy is much worse and therefore the protests are greater before a draft. Should there be a draft, we could see a state of civil war here, and it will certainly involve the workingclass, who are a majority non-white. The combination of a draft and the destruction of the US economy will cause the workingclass to strike nationally to end the private profit system that is the cause of war. It will take that kind of labor action to finally have peace.
