As of 10am EST Monday October 22nd, at least 59 people had been arrested taking part in the No War No Warming direct action taking place all day on capitol hill.

Protesters used creativity in staging their demonstrations to bring attention to the need to end the war in Iraq, and to focus our energy on solving the problem of global warming.

Re: Re: Photos of Arrests - Citizens Blockading Independence Avenue

Word!
It's a shame how much the night Georgetown got so much respect world wide and gets spit on by the snotty locals.

Change isn't always pretty, all tied up in ribbons, and promoted by Volvo driving whites.

They just can't stand it when something is more effective than their usual peace picnics.

Re: Photos of Arrests - Citizens Blockading Independence Avenue

How do you expect to stop warming? We can't cool down the sun.

Re: Re: Photos of Arrests - Citizens Blockading Independence Avenue

We KNOW that C02 levels have risen. We KNOW that increased CO2 levels can cause greenhouse warming - it's basic physics - and that higher CO2 levels correlate with higher global temperatures - using ice-core data and the like.

Referring to known facts doesn't violate Occam's Razor. Adding speculations about changes in the sun's behavior does.

Re: Re: Re: Photos of Arrests - Citizens Blockading Independence Avenue

Well, is carbon dioxide increase a cause or effect of warming?

How is our carbon dioxide getting to Mars? You do know that Mars is heating too don't you? So we are creating a solar problem by our CO2.

Is cell phone use causing the Earth's magnetic field to decay?

Read pages 58-64 & 95 of Nov 1, 2007 issue of Rolling stone magazine and maybe you red neck can learn something.

Re: Photos of Arrests -People Blockading Independence Avenue

I changed the title of this on my comment from "citizens" to "people",since this is a worldwide problem,andnonm-citizens are involved in the struggle. I think these actions were/are great. We need more like them.

Re: Photos of Arrests - Citizens Blockading Independence Avenue

Polar bears? What blockade? It looks to me like a bunch of hippies camping there chanting "Make love not war..." And on top of it you had to pay the police to arrest you? Bitches, please!

Re: Re: Photos of Arrests - Citizens Blockading Independence Avenue

It was the same old same old.

Not Negative = not being negative to oppressors.

not negative = negative to those who oppressed.

This is the US. I mean dude, like just because people are dying doesn't mean you should give up your privilege. You should go to college and try to change the system from within!!

If more people have to die so you can live comfortably, whatevs.. you'll free them one day. But first you need to vote for Hillary, Obama or John.

Those smashy-smashy folks just don't get it. All that negative press attention just pisses off congress. This hopefully pleased them. Thank god they weren't pressured. Good Work!

what a good little doggie you are

do what the dems say to do
act the way the way the dems want you to act
think the way the dems want you to think

I love you too!

Re: Photos of Arrests - Citizens Blockading Independence Avenue

Hats off to Nadine B. and many of the other organizers! Great action, and really nice to see so many young faces involved. So much more positive and productive than the nonsense in Georgetown over the weekend.

How was it productive, Pete?

They set a goal of "shutting down the Congress" (which would have necessitated tens of thousands of people spread over huge area, and so wasn't very realistic in the first place).

They didn't achieve it, nor come close.

If they took "post and forfeit" agreements, they basically paid the police to arrest them. How is this productive?

Even the "blockade" of the Cannon Building only blocked one of multiple above-ground entrances, not to mention underground entrances.

How did this help stop war or warming?

How has this helped break the mold of overwhelmingly-white "peace" (for lack of a more descriptive term) demonstrators patting one another on the back?

How has this helped break the mold of out-of-towners coming to DC to protest and ignoring the problems of DC residents?

These aren't rhetorical questions.

Re: How was it productive, Pete?

"These aren't rhetorical questions"

No they aren't, but you make an excellent point.

Good job!

Re: How was it productive, Pete?

They are good questions. Of course there should be more people willing to risk arrest. But there aren't; most folks are complacent. There should be more groups working together to really actualize a *mass* mobilization. For what it was -- it was creative and positive.

Personally, I no longer choose to post and forfeit and most of the folks I've done actions with recently agree. However, I realize going to court -- especially for out-of-towners -- is not for everyone.

Re: Photos of Arrests - Citizens Blockading Independence Avenue

Props to the people who organized and participated in this protest. We need more protests like this one and the one in Georgetown the other night. Now we just need to get more people motivated to express their dissent.

Re: Photos of Arrests - Citizens Blockading Independence Avenue

I dropped by to see pictures of my friends and found this interesting discussion, I hope you don't mind if I kibbitz.

The person who is posting under the pseudonym, "Occam's razor" is a bit smug for being wrong. William of Occam stated that "It is a sin to multiply ones hypotheses unecessarily" which is different than the simplest answer is the right one. That kind of thinking is what allows predjudice to function under the guise of common sense.

While the protests themselves are often the same old dance (on both sides) they may be able to get the message across through a high profile in the media. (though sadly, I have heard four explantations for the protests so far and the newspapers still say that the protests were against the IMF.

Regarding the observation that global warming is caused by the sun, irony needs to be clearly packaged (in text) so it can be distinguished from ignorance.

It's hard to tell from your post where you are coming from.

Re: Photos of Arrests - Citizens Blockading Independence Avenue

As someone who was at the Georgetown march, I would like to remind people that respecting a diversity of tactics goes both ways. While No war no warming did not shut down congress there is no reason to hate on their tactics. I am pretty sure that georgetown is still standing and while we did disrupt business as usual the action was hardly what any of us had hoped it would be. In the lead up to the Conventions next year we need to practice and refine all disruptive tactics. It is going to take lock downs, blockades and militant marches to shut this shit down. Seriously, the hate is just ignorant as fuck.

Re: Re: Photos of Arrests - Citizens Blockading Independence Avenue

I don't think it is hate, it's more like snobbery and there is no room for snobbery when we are trying to get things done.

Let everyone protest in the way they feel works, and people need to lay off the judgement which nobody has room for.

Queer@, we will get it done!

Re: Re: Photos of Arrests - Citizens Blockading Independence Avenue

I do not respect violence against people. Never will. There are many creative ways to resist, and some were on display at Independence Avenue the other day.

Re: Re: Re: Photos of Arrests - Citizens Blockading Independence Avenue

There was never intended any violence against people.

Stop watching Faux News, Pete, you're buying into their bullshit.

Nice language. If you need to use that language, you lost me. No wonder nobody wants to listen.

Re: Photos of Arrests - Citizens Blockading Independence Avenue

Again!? It is sad and frustrating that the editorial group of Indymedia keeps deleting my replies and comments concerning the attacks pete keeps launching against the actions in Georgetown last Friday. Indymedia sends the wrong message and clear biases when it allows the moralistic judgments and comments of mainstream pacifists to go unchallenged while it censors those of activists that are perceived more radical in the movement! An explanation will be nice! And, thanks Luke for standing up for me.

Re: Re: Photos of Arrests - Citizens Blockading Independence Avenue

I am not a pacifist, but I aspire to be one -- in the tradition of Dorothy Day.

Peace and justice for all, brothers and sisters. We may disagree over tactics, but let's try and respect each other as people of conscience.

Re: Photos of Arrests - Citizens Blockading Independence Avenue

personal attacks are a violation of editorial policy. comments without personal attacks, stay up.

Re: Photos of Arrests - Citizens Blockading Independence Avenue

It is white-reactionary-privileged pacifism that is responsible for people thinking that the only way they can affect change is by Parading and seating around buildings and enriching the police coffers by making people pay for mass arrest actions. Arrogant, self-righteous pacifism only serves to perpetuate and maintain the most violent state terrorist entity in the world today: the US government.
Some conveniently use the accidental injury of that woman in Georgetown, but never mention the blatant murder of 14-year old Deante Rawllins by DC cops and the violence and siege they maintain on black and Latino communities on daily basis. Is the injury of one white woman somehow more horrible than the lives of young black and Latino kids in this city? Most important, does anyone think we are going to stop police and state terrorism with hugs and peace parades? I beg to differ! I'm sick and tired of these "professional" white, anti-war pacifists coming here, doing their thing and not giving a cent about what local oppressed communities of color are going through!

As for business losses or property damage in Georgetown, I don't think you'll find any sympathy on this side of the city! This petulant arrogance is annoying, specially when people preach this "high moral ground" and pass judgment on the actions of others that they don't have the courage to take! Stop judging others from your white comfort zone and Fox News which will only make you more reactionary by the day!

Re: Re: Photos of Arrests - Citizens Blockading Independence Avenue

Greet valid criticism with personal (and inaccurate) attacks. Classic. In order to build a movement, you don't keep doing things which alienate people. So what takes courage, throwing bricks?

By the way, I hardly ever watch TV. And I never watch Fox News.

By the way, the tower shields make you look like the cops -- and same basic tactics. Give it up.

Re: Photos of Arrests - Citizens Blockading Independence Avenue

Oh the petty bullshit sensitivities of these self-righteous pacifists! They give themselves the moral authority to be the ultimate judges about the right and wrong forms of resistance to state oppression, but when you call them on their coward pandering and accommodation with the powers that be, including the police, they just whine and bitch instead of dealing with the issues in an honest, straight-forward manner! Their preaching of the "high moral ground" or "holier than thou" bullshit is hypocritical when they keep repeating this sickening cycle of paying cops for mass arrests that only help to maintain and perpetuate the fascist police state in which we live! Has it ever occurred to them that by paying all this money, that by now perhaps reaches into the millions, they are helping subsidize police state terrorism and repression in communities of color in this city and all over this country!? It is fake grandstanding and posturing pretending to stop the wars this empire carries all over the world and not saying or doing anything against the wars against poor people and communities of color in this country!

The one or two people obsessing pathologically with the woman accidentally hurt in Georgetown in order to attack what we did, should think about and deal with these issues instead of shifting blame and calling my responses invalid and personal! It is them who use people as political football by placing higher value in the well being of this woman as opposed to "other" people in the city! That type of attitude is classist and racist at best! Friday night, the police assaulted many of us verbally and physically with their motorcycles and bicycles. If they are so righteous, why don't they condemn police violence!

As for the kids that marched on Georgetown, they are all alright. They showed a level of commitment and courage that none of these high preachers of pacifism ever will! We all know what these self-appointed leaders and celebrity-status-seeking moralists will do in such circumstances: continue with their parasitic passivity and tell us to just "turn the other cheek" and follow the path of "least resistance." All there is left for these people is to turn into snitches and start selling out all of us that act in ways they don't approve of to the cops!

Instead of using their reactionary politics to tell us what to do, it is them who should think about their outdated tactics and give them up!

Re: Re: Photos of Arrests - Citizens Blockading Independence Avenue

I have no idea why you are so hostile to pacifism. However, I will respect you and listen to your criticism.

Re: Photos of Arrests - Citizens Blockading Independence Avenue

i honor the courage of any who step out to oppose the killing of the planet and her people. we must all consider the strongest possible actions as a way of daily life. what exactly each must do resides in the heart and certainly must be heeded. noviolence is just as much a way of resistance among many communities of color as it is among many principled whites. i feel integrity, courage and honor are requirements for taking on the beast killing all life. i see privilege residing in approaches taken by both those who claim pacificism and those who claim the value of violence.

what must be done to truly call to effective unity that simultaneously undoes the oppression among us while ending genocide everywhere on earth demands stellar frontline live.

from my own experiences working with traditional Dine and Hopi resisting corporate resource rape, pillage and profit, clear guidance from one's consicence is of utmost importance.

as the mother of children who have been harmed by racism and a witness to the bigotry of my own activist people, we must each be self critical in actions we take that impact more than oneself.

elitism, patriarchal habits, domination, superiority, competition all threaten our work to stop the killing. too many men spew forth anti pacifisim diatribes with superficial critiques. those who know the successes of nonviolence are NOT allowed voice. those with resources and privilege can document each facet of their stands, while millions go unnoticed by all except vigilant witnesses who get the word out.....

27,000 rapes of women and girls in the congo in 2006;
femicide spreads all over the amerikkkas and the globe;
migrating peoples are being slaughtered along the us/mexican border and in the sea of aidan; who has the guns and why...
divide and conquer will do us all in if we cannot clerly prioritize the stopping of genocide in amerikkka as well as in Iraq, Afghanistan, Darfur, Congo, Mexico, Colombia, Papua New Guinea,etc.....

Stop All Violence and Hear the Granmothers and Mothers for a Change.
