note:
While the Cuba 5 are been held in maximum security jails, spread out across the country, the US is currently in the process of creating another "Cuba 5", this time with Venezuelan nationals.

In an editorial on December 26 (A Bagman's Tale
Did Hugo Chávez purchase the allegiance of Argentina's new president?
), the Washington Post editorial board unburdened itself of its opinion concerning Chavez and newly elected Argentine president Cristina Fernandez, with the case of Guido Alejandro Antonini Wilson, who was arrested at the Buenos Aires airport with a bunch of undeclared cash.

WPost recounts how this Venezuelan/US national "began cooperating with U.S. law enforcement" which is odd since the incident took place in Argentina, and in fact the US is refusing Argentina's extradition request for this individual, using his testimony instead to bring charges against 5 Venezuelans for failing to register as foreign agents.

In a truly patronizing aside, the Editors complain that "some, demonstrating their ignorance of the U.S. legal system, blame the Bush administration for the results of a criminal investigation." Yes, you know, the great US legal system with its checks and balances, which could never, ever be misused for political ends. Those ignorant South Americans!

So it is interesting to hear Mr. Weinglass describe how in the case of the Cuba 5, an appeals court ruled unanimously that they were entitled to a retrial based on the fact that it was impossible for them to get a fair hearing in Miami, only to have then Attorney General Alberto Gonzales challenge that ruling, resulting in the reinstatement of the convictions by a separate judicial board. And we all know that former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales would never, ever meddle with the justice system for political purposes…
