If the draft was reinstated, you'd see bombings and burnings of draft boards and induction centers, just like during Vietnam. During the Vietnam War, almost 400 draft boards were either burned, bombed, or raided and records removed and destroyed. Each draft board's paper records were unique and NOT backed up-so every destroyed draft board meant no enforceable induction order could be issued against any person registered with that draft board.

The "King Hit" was the bombing of Whitehall Induction Center(covered in Jane Alpert's book Growing Up Underground-her collective did it). This insurgent attack leveled the induction center for the NYC area-and destroyed 2 MILLION draft files!

If you had half a brain you would realize that it isn't the recruiters who are at fault for your war. It isn't the recruiters who are sending kids to die. If you knew how the system worked, you would know that CONGRESS AND THE PRESIDENT is at fault. The recruiters are soldiers/sailors/airmen who are given an assignment, just like everyone else in the service. Most of them don't want to be recruiters because it's a shit job that requires entirely too much paperwork. This attack on a recruiting office is one of the most ridiculous "solutions" that I've come across lately. To protest a war, these people attack the soldiers. That doesn't make a damn bit of sense. If they actually had any BALLS, they'd be protesting at offices of Congressional representatives instead of attacking the offices of a recruiter that only makes a little over $2840/month (based on E-6 Staff Sergeant pay at 8 years of service). This attack on the office doesn't address the problem at all. The way this turned out is severely disappointing, at it proves that there are still people in my country that don't know WHERE to vent their anger.

I mean, its not as if sds is the one student organization in the country that has issues with being predominately white and middle class. Instead of acting as if sds is the exception to chastise, why don't we talk about working toward a student movement where working class folks and folks of color are welcomed and can feel comfortable taking part, and taking leadership.
Also, diversifying leadership isn't something that happens overnight. Its not as if we can just ask the folks of color in sds, "Could you please be leaders now? Thanks." Leadership development takes time. sds is fully aware of its demographics and we are doing our best to create space in the organization for working class folks and folks of color.

Perhaps if we assume good faith in our comradicals instead of just dismissing them, we can work toward positive change instead of just feelings of self-importance.

I don't think anyone said SDS was an exception, or the only group, that was white dominated. But instead of denying any fault and pretending that people are saying things that they aren't, it would be helpful as a first step to stop making excuses.

Frankly, there are a lot of people out there who are turned off by white-dominated groups, and there are a lot of people who see nothing radical about well organized groups of white people getting what they want. Isn't that what always happens? Large organized groups of white people getting their way?

The problem is that almost all of the american left is economic reductionist, in part because almost all of the organizations have roots in racist labor unions or racist state socialist parties (SDS is no exception, look up League for Industrial Democracy, you don't get the benefits of the name without the baggate) and even on this thread about racism, you've lumped "working class folks and folks of color" together, as if fighting racism was just a form of fighting classism.

The idea that we all share a movement and are peers is bogus, and it was manufactured by people looking to marshal people behind parties designed to seize power. If you're a POC fighting racism and specifically the marginalization of POC in politics, then there's hardly anything to support or be inspired by in a well organized white-dominated group getting what they want.

Accept that first, instead of making excuses, and maybe then you'll start to see ways of moving forward.

As American citizens we have the right to protest and to do so publically for or against whatever strikes our fancy. Throughout our history our military has been a defining force behind this very freedom we still maintain. However, that right does not grant freedom of lawless action when the line is crossed to defacing public or private property. As soon as that line is crossed you leave the status or protestor to that of criminal, and when you do it to federal property it is a federal crime.

I do not support the actions of what this group did in any way. I do support anyone's right to protest, but this "protest" broke several federal laws and possibly several local laws as well, which no longer validates it as a "protest" but more of a group of criminals allowed to walk free under the guise of protest action.
