If the draft was reinstated, you'd see bombings and burnings of draft boards and induction centers, just like during Vietnam. During the Vietnam War, almost 400 draft boards were either burned, bombed, or raided and records removed and destroyed. Each draft board's paper records were unique and NOT backed up-so every destroyed draft board meant no enforceable induction order could be issued against any person registered with that draft board.

I mean, its not as if sds is the one student organization in the country that has issues with being predominately white and middle class. Instead of acting as if sds is the exception to chastise, why don't we talk about working toward a student movement where working class folks and folks of color are welcomed and can feel comfortable taking part, and taking leadership.
Also, diversifying leadership isn't something that happens overnight. Its not as if we can just ask the folks of color in sds, "Could you please be leaders now? Thanks." Leadership development takes time. sds is fully aware of its demographics and we are doing our best to create space in the organization for working class folks and folks of color.

Perhaps if we assume good faith in our comradicals instead of just dismissing them, we can work toward positive change instead of just feelings of self-importance.

I don't think anyone said SDS was an exception, or the only group, that was white dominated. But instead of denying any fault and pretending that people are saying things that they aren't, it would be helpful as a first step to stop making excuses.

Frankly, there are a lot of people out there who are turned off by white-dominated groups, and there are a lot of people who see nothing radical about well organized groups of white people getting what they want. Isn't that what always happens? Large organized groups of white people getting their way?

The idea that we all share a movement and are peers is bogus, and it was manufactured by people looking to marshal people behind parties designed to seize power. If you're a POC fighting racism and specifically the marginalization of POC in politics, then there's hardly anything to support or be inspired by in a well organized white-dominated group getting what they want.

Accept that first, instead of making excuses, and maybe then you'll start to see ways of moving forward.

As American citizens we have the right to protest and to do so publically for or against whatever strikes our fancy. Throughout our history our military has been a defining force behind this very freedom we still maintain. However, that right does not grant freedom of lawless action when the line is crossed to defacing public or private property. As soon as that line is crossed you leave the status or protestor to that of criminal, and when you do it to federal property it is a federal crime.

I do not support the actions of what this group did in any way. I do support anyone's right to protest, but this "protest" broke several federal laws and possibly several local laws as well, which no longer validates it as a "protest" but more of a group of criminals allowed to walk free under the guise of protest action.

Actually I went to the memorial and saw it with my own eyes and it looked uncleaned and pretty unkempt but the one thing I did see was a lot of people who would have seen something...so the only way you could get away with doing it is if you have a bunch of right wing buddies and some sort of oil? or whatever you people used and quickly splash it on and walk away. If a bunch of anarchists were around the wall it might create suspicion and people would be keeping an extra close eye, plus if we were going to destroy something why would it only be that small point on one panel. As for the whole friday night thing, that substance you splashed on looked pretty fresh from your own Freeper photos which you just happened to be there to take?!?!? (it mentioned in the post ConcreteBob and the Trooprallys being the ones there and TGSLtakoma posted it)

When Phelps and his band of hatemongers said they were going to protest at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, they wound up cowarding out, running all the way to 7TH ST after getting word that Veterans' groups and anti-hate/pro-Gay activists had temporarily joined forces to hunt them down.

Do you think that 23 year old Sergeant really has any control as to what's happening in the world? Why not express your discontent somwhere it could matter. Why not protest in front of congress? You guys (anti-war folks) can't have it both ways: you can't praise the "bravery" of the idiot children who trashed public property and withstood attempts by "the man" to stop them, and then castigate those who verbally threatened the children as low-lifes for threatening to beat up a child. Either the people who trashed the recruiting station are considered adults for taking an adult action, thus they are fair game, or they are kids and have a protected status that the recruiter respected. They didn't run the recruiter off; he has the civilized decency not to beat children. In the latter case, their parents should be fined for destruction of public property and the kids should hauled in front of a juvie judge. Or, they can face the music like adults (which I would respect more); but then if things do get physical (they shouldn't but they sometimes do) they get to suck it up like an adult.

I hated the Army.
