The big national Latino and Hispanic coalitions of past years were not present at May Day this year, probably due to the diversions of Presidential campaigns. But the grassroot local immigration advocates were present.

After rounding up 600 undocumented Hispanic residents of Prince William County, and deporting some, Tuesday night, the Washington Post says the Supervisors of the County have reversed their previous policy, and will go back to asking for immigration status after an arrest. This county immigration policy based on racial profiling, was costing the County too much money.

But according to Ricardo Juarez of Mexicanos Sin Fronteras, the latest decision of Prince William County is still not clear. The supervisors themselves do not seem able to explain the actual terms of their latest decision.

It is also unclear if the decision was made for strictly the reasons given to the Washington Post, ie that the county didn't want to pay for cameras for police cars.

Other possible reasons could be the cost of litigation over enforcing an illegal and unConstitutional policy on immigration and racial profiling, detaining large numbers of people in jail with no Federal backup, large exodus of residents from Prince William, closing of bodegas and other small businesses leading to loss of tax revenue...all in the middle of a recession.
