Massive Critical Mass chokes pre-game stadium traffic

On Friday, May 2 the DC Critical MAss ride drew between 50 and 100 riders, including a crew from College Park, riders on "choppers" and high bikes, and so many more.
After several fits and starts, the ride finally wound its way to the agreed target: the National stadium!

When we got there, there was a bonus: It was GAME DAY, and the area was choked with car-driving yuppies from the suburbs! Contrary to city advice, the area was swarming with baseball fans all seeking places to park their cars as well as crowds from the Metro.

The cops directing traffic tried desperately to "wave us on" right past the area, but we hung a u-turn for a second pass after barricades 1 block away blocked our final approach.

Soon, there were a LOT of cops responding-to an unrelated incident south of M st in the neighborhood there-a neighborhood of color police have been trying to get baseball fans to avoid. one after another, police vehicles horned their way past the ride-hopefully to bail out some wealthy baseball fan who got his ass kicked while invading someone else's neighborhood.

Local residents in communities that have survived the wave of evictions the stadium brought cheered the ride as we passed. People were out on their stoops, children in the yards, you name it.

It seems that after the sheer hell that the stadium has imposed on the neighborhoods, we get cheered everytime we go and make life a little harder for the baseball "nationalists!"

national's park was built on the carcass of a gay bath house.

Re: Massive Critical Mass chokes pre-game stadium traffic

Why does the baseball fan have to be wealthy and why does he or she have to have "got[ten] his ass kicked while invading someone else's neighborhood"? This could have been any kind of emergency. I, myself, do not want to read stories in the metro section about young Black men losing their lives off Delaware Ave anymore. Any upgrade to the "hood is fine with me so long as the death and carnage ceases. Plus, I am Black man, a Nats fan, and I make minimum wage. Do you despise me for going to the game with my son?

That stadium isn't for it's immediate neighbors, and that neighborhood rocks. I'd rather hang out in the neighborhood grilling our own rather than pay out the ass to be bored inside the stadium. Then we'll walk over to tally where stadium goers are from, and they'll be from the mobile and monied suburbs.

they do offer $5 last minute tickets. if i lived nearby, i might take advantage of this offer.

Re: Massive Critical Mass chokes pre-game stadium traffic

The stadium is not being attended well and was a waste of taxpayer money...there was a recent article on yahoo about it. All those millions down the drain for some second rate team playing on stolen land with money that is critically needed for schools and hospitals and fixing up and building new shelters for the growing homeless population!
