DC COUNCIL VOTES TO LIMIT FREE SPEECH!

DC City Council approved a noise bill Tuesday that Metro Council President Jos Williams immediately blasted as "a resounding slap in the face of free speech here in the nation's capital."

The Council voted down compromise legislation crafted with labor support. "This preliminary vote by the City Council impinges on free speech," said ACLU President Johnny Barnes, "and we are disappointed that the Evans compromise amendment -- which would have ameliorated the issues raised -- failed to pass." The vote was 7-6 with Councilmembers Marion Barry, Mary Cheh, Tommy Wells, David Catania, Carol Schwartz, Yvette Alexander and Kwame Brown voting to limit free speech. Though the bill is intended to deal with one specific group, labor and civil rights advocates are concerned that it will be used to limit noise levels at other demonstrations in the District. "We will not be silenced," vowed Williams, "the demand for justice cannot be whispered."

From the Washington Post:
"Under amendments approved yesterday in an 8 to 5 vote, it would restrict noncommercial public speech during the day to no greater than 80 decibels or 10 decibels above the ambient noise level when measured from 50 feet."

Re: DC COUNCIL VOTES TO LIMIT FREE SPEECH!

Since commercial speech is excempt.

From now on, my speech will be commercial.

Re: DC COUNCIL VOTES TO LIMIT FREE SPEECH!

As the dinosaur unions become more irrelevant, they resort to intimidation, threats, and general disruption to make their case to a population that is not listening. Now that only 7% of private sector workers are unionized, the unions' desperation is growing.

Protests work both ways, you know.

Re: DC COUNCIL VOTES TO LIMIT FREE SPEECH!

But they didn't limit free speech, they just limited the volume of it during the day. So how is this "limiting" free speech?

Re: Re: DC COUNCIL VOTES TO LIMIT FREE SPEECH!

Because how the hell are you going to protest if you are whispering...fucking cars make a ton more noise then people and people should be free to make as much damn noise as they want. If commercials can be blaring in Gallery Place/Chinatown then people being loud should be fine in fact even better because they aren't trying to push their corporate crap on you!

Re: Re: Re: DC COUNCIL VOTES TO LIMIT FREE SPEECH!

sound is amplified when it travels between buildings. the decibel level will still be at a level which allows the sound to be almost deafening!
