Memorial to fallen cyclist desecrated

At Connectiout Ave and R st, a cyclist was run down and killed on July 8. Her name was Alice Swanson, and she was run down by a garbage truck. Now, the "Ghost Bike"memorial at the site of the crash has been desecrated with a drawn-in mustache on Alice's picture, courtesy of some goon with a Magic Marker.

The mustache drawn in blue pen implies someone thinks Alice's death is funny or their idea of a joke. Guess that's the low opinion the SUV crowd has for ALL cyclists.

This is the complete memorial to Alice Swanson, who lost her life while riding in the bike land on R st.
The blue marker you see on Alice's picture isn't Photoshop or Gimp-it's some asshole's pen!

Amongst all the expressions of sorrow chalked into the sidewalk, some insensitive jerk just HAD to mark up Alice's picture! The only thing I can imagine is it must be some joker who just HATES bicyclists-and probably drives an SUV.

Re: Memorial to fallen cyclist desecrated

It was probably just some stupid kids. I seriously doubt a driver who HATES bicyclists would take the time to get out of their car and mark up the picture.

Re: Re: Memorial to fallen cyclist desecrated

Or it could have been some idiot who drives and was at that time walking or just some right wing idiot or car lover, you never know.

Re: Memorial to fallen cyclist desecrated

Even if it was some stupid kids, that shit is not cool. A bicycler's death is atrocious. I volunteer in D.C. twice a week and walk around Washington Circle to get there.

I've been almost hit several times while using the crosswalk around Washington Circle/Foggy Bottom. I don't dart in front of moving traffic! I used the crosswalk at the appropriate time.

Drivers need to slow the fuck down and stop being assholes. I don't care how stressful your job is that you need to take out your aggression and nearly mow down bystanders. If you're that pressed for time, get another job and have more regard for pedestrians in the meantime.

Re: Re: Memorial to fallen cyclist desecrated

Nick, I know exactly what you mean. I take the Metro to Dupont Circle for work every weekday, and never ceased to be amazed at drivers' complete disregard for pedestrians.

And there are no crosswalks in Dupont Circle. Oh, don't get me wrong -- there are parallel white lines at every intersection. It's just that drivers don't treat them as if they mean anything.

I regularly spit on cars stopped in crosswalks in Dupont, and encourage others to do the same. I'm also strongly considering starting to key them.

Re: Memorial to fallen cyclist desecrated

maybe they think she's a cute target, which isn't funny, which if i met her briefly on a July 4th ride, she was a nice girl...
I went by recently to see the memorial, and wondered why somehting more permanent wasn't there. Maybe we make some permanent changes to the intersection including a permanent sign of a biker died here.

in gangs they put the shoes up in the wires, maybe we need to go higher with the bike up the pole?

my guess is a drunk kid or several with peer pressure, which probably is worse as they wouldn't respect bikers driving home drunk too...

Re: Memorial to fallen cyclist desecrated

I don't think we as cyclists will accomplish much until we learn to downplay our own anti-car biases. I know anti-bike bias is pervasive, but equating a--hole with SUV-driver isn't helping.

Re: Memorial to fallen cyclist desecrated

As of friday the memorial looked a bit better there were some knocked over candles with waxed spilled out but the sign looked hardly desecrated. Those who desecrated this memorial should admit too what they have done and regardless of it was an SUV driver or not I have met very few SUV drivers who A. knew how to drive properly or B. knew how to drive safely or C. were generally a good people. This is not too say they don't exist but from my experience and most other peoples experience they are not all that great.
I don't ever think we should down play our anti car biases, would you tell a descendent of a slave brought from africa to down play their anti slavery biases or tell a grieving mother of a dead soldier to down play her anti war biases? I will say this and I will say this proudly FUCK CARS and FUCK CAR CULTURE. Until we learn that all of that is fucked up we are dooming our mother Earth to an early grave and we as the dirty rotten leeches on her have no right to do that!

Much love and respect and blessings to Alice and all those who have been needlessly killed by cars

Re: Re: Memorial to fallen cyclist desecrated

equating car culture with slavery/genocide is absurd and fails to understand the nature of the problem. most people in this country don't live in a big city with public transportation and can't bike to work. telling them to fuck off isnt doesnt help

Re: Re: Re: Memorial to fallen cyclist desecrated

That was not the intention, the intention was too stop telling very passionate people who have been hurt in whatever way that they should tone down their biases, the two are very different. As for the rest of the country and the world, how did we get around before cars? How did we live? In many cases we lived in a very communalistic society a lot of times based in bio regions and sometimes humans were nomadic, but they didn't have cars. Cars have not been around that long yet people have still moved around and lived for many thousands of years, without them. We spend too much time in this crazy world to think about life and our real future and how we can change things and potentially help out the one which gave us life, Mother Earth. We should we be destroying her so we can have a car when cars haven't been around for all that long and people lived without them.
