Housing Takeover.

Activists take over an abandoned house in NE for homeless.
Homes Not Jails successfully took over another abandoned house located at 304 K Street NE on Saturday in spite of a stand off with police.

The takeover march received a police escort from the meeting point at Union Station to the house. Once at the house the supporters were greeted by four more squad cars and a paddy wagon.

The police successfully prevented the takeover crew from cleaning the yard but did not get the people in the house to leave. Unable to produce grounds for arrest the police eventually left the property. However they promised to return and seize the house.

Although the situation is currently unstable HNJ still occupies the home and is continuing to renovate it as they prepare for further confrontations with the police.

Hell yeah!

Kick ass! I hope that HNJ will post information on how to do a takeover on the IMC site so that people in other cities can learn how and do their own.

I applaude you efforts

I was at the meeting yesterday at UM, and met some of the HNJ people. I'm sorry I couldn't of helped myself, but I'm very pleased to see that victory has been achieved.

Good Victory

I was at the housing takeover on Saturday and it was a huge victory I believe for everyone. We where able to house a mother and her young boy and then lady another person. We are still not out of the clear. Police could come back at any time. Even if you didn't make it Saturday you can still help out. We need food, blankets, paint, tools and anything else. We have to work on this house so it is a more liveable area for families. We also need people to stay there during the day to watch over the house. So if you interested come out and see what you can do and who is the coordinator for each item. thanks for the support!

Homele$$ in DC

I was at the takeover Saturday and it was absolutly amazing...I'd encourage everyone to come by and help out with construction, homewarming gifts for Thomas and anything else.
Also if anyone has connections Im in need of finding places wiling to donate food, besides items liberated from various dumpsters.
The house is in great condition, better then alot of places where people helping out live. We hopefully will have a garden planted and all this other exciting stuff.

Refreshing

It's refreshing to see that activism is working. While this is only a small example, it's victorys like these which lead people to see that with enough support anything can be accomplished. Now if it could only happen on a larger scale...
