DC Government Announces Closure of Gales Shelter, 150 Men and Women May Be Homeless for the Holidays in Downtown DC

On Wednesday, November 19, 2003 the District government posted notices at the Gales Shelter announcing the closure of the facility "no later than December 19, 2003." Over 150 homeless men and women currently reside at the Gales Shelter, which is located at 65 Massachusetts Avenue, N.W.

The DC Department of Human Services plans to close Gales so that the building - a former public school - can be renovated for office space for a nonprofit. The District government plans to provide alternative shelter space for homeless men at a new facility at 1355-1357 New York Avenue, N.E., which is over two miles away from Gales. "With winter approaching, it is unconscionable for the city to close down shelter in such a critical location. Having places people can walk to from downtown is key to saving lives in the cold weather," said Mary Ann Luby, Outreach Worker at the Washington Legal Clinic for the Homeless.
The District government also plans to provide alternative shelter space for homeless women at the nearby John L. Young Center. However, the Center will close at the end of the hypothermia season on March 31, 2004, whereas Gales has operated year-round.

Street outreach workers are reporting a 20% increase in street homelessness in the District this year. "If anything, we need the city to open up more shelters for this winter, not close places down," said Arnoldo Borja, Outreach Worker for Neighbors' Consejo.

The announcement to close the Gales Shelter coincides with National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week (November 18 - 21). The planned closure date is two days before National Homeless Persons' Memorial Day, an annual day of mourning and remembrance of individuals who have died while homeless.

Gales residents have more than 1,000 signatures on a petition in support of keeping the shelter open. They are joined by the Coalition of Housing and Homeless Organizations (COHHO) in calling on Mayor Williams to renovate Gales as a permanent, low-barrier shelter while identifying alternate space for the nonprofit offices currently seeking to locate at Gales.

COHHO is a diverse group of over 30 non-profit organizations and homeless individuals who have a common goal of ending homelessness. Toward that end, COHHO seeks to improve housing and supportive services for all homeless and nearly homeless people in the District.

Re: DC Government Announces Closure of Gales Shelter, 150 Men and Women May Be Homeless for the Holidays in Downtown DC

Being an Evangelist that have worked with homeless people @ the Kwanzaa Kitchen, I have a heart to see Men, Women & Children off the street.
With so many various reasons as to why they are on the streets, homeless people of any race, creed, color or education should not live on the streets. It will please me greatly to one day see the streets empty of homeless people. Unfortunately this may not happen, JESUS, HIMSELF also ministered to the homeless.
Society need to do all they can to help with education and shelter then jobs, hopefully as the person who is delivered from this plight they in turn will reach there hand out to pull someone from this disaster.
