Anarchist Practice, Rational Democracy, and Community -- NCOR 2004

This is a recording of Mark Lance, on "Anarchist Practice, Rational Democracy, and Community". He spoke at the National Conference on Organized Resistance, at American University in Washington DC, on January 25, 2004.

Mark Lance is a professor of philosophy and professor of justice and peace at Georgetown University in the District of Columbia. He also teaches at the Institute for Social Ecology in Vermont. He works on philosophy of language, logic, epistemology, political philosophy, theories of nonviolence, and anarchism. Mark Lance is also an activist. For the last 20 years, he has been involved in movements relating to issues from Palestine to Latin America, and from economic justice to the rights of sexual minorities. His current activist work is primarily with SUSTAIN.

In this philosophical discussion, Mark Lance presents a range of ideas about the nature of anarchism, democracy, and rationality. Tying together some philosophical ideas with ideas in political theory, the result is a conception of anarchism that starts in a rather different place from typical anarchist thought but which brings in many key anarchist themes.

After the main presentation, there was time for nearly an hour of questions and discussion. This part is posted as two files for easier downloading.
